Question 1

What is an R-value and how much do I need in Kansas City?

Accepted Answer

R-value measures a material's resistance to heat flow — the higher the number, the better the insulation. In the Kansas City climate zone, energy codes recommend R-49 to R-60 in attics for new or upgraded insulation. Our free evaluation tells you exactly what your home needs.

Question 2

How much can I really save on energy bills?

Accepted Answer

Homes insulated and air-sealed by Star Companies typically save 20% to 40% on heating and cooling costs. Actual savings depend on your home's current condition, the scope of work, and how much conditioned air you're currently losing through leaks.

Question 3

What's the difference between open cell and closed cell spray foam?

Accepted Answer

Open cell foam is softer, lower-cost, and great for sound dampening in interior walls, attic floors, and rim joists. Closed cell foam is denser, offers a higher R-value per inch, acts as a moisture barrier, and adds structural rigidity — ideal for basements, crawlspaces, and exterior applications. We recommend the right one for each location.

Question 4

Do you offer a warranty on insulation?

Accepted Answer

Yes. As an Owens Corning Certified Energy Expert®, Star Companies backs installations with Owens Corning's exclusive 10-year installation warranty — something very few Kansas City insulation companies can offer.

Question 5

How long does an insulation project take?

Accepted Answer

Most residential attic insulation projects are completed in a single day. Larger whole-home projects, spray foam applications, or drywall work may take 2–4 days. We'll give you an accurate timeline with your free estimate.

Question 6

Do I need to leave my home during installation?

Accepted Answer

For most fiberglass and blown-in attic work, no — you can stay home. We recommend temporarily vacating for closed-cell spray foam applications due to off-gassing during curing (typically a few hours). Our crew will walk you through exactly what to expect before we start.

Question 7

Is spray foam insulation safe?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Once cured, spray foam is inert and safe. Our certified installers follow strict ventilation and re-occupancy guidelines so your home is safe to return to. We only use professionally installed, code-compliant products.

Question 8

Do you offer financing or payment plans?

Accepted Answer

We offer flexible options and can discuss financing for qualifying projects. Because insulation often pays for itself through energy savings, many homeowners see a net-positive monthly cash flow. Ask us about current programs when you request your free estimate.

Question 9

How do I prepare my home for an insulation project?

Accepted Answer

Clear access to the attic or work areas, remove fragile items from nearby walls, and make sure pets are secured. We'll send a prep checklist specific to your project so there are no surprises on installation day.

Question 10

What areas of Kansas City do you serve?

Accepted Answer

We serve the entire Greater Kansas City metro and surrounding counties — including Raytown, Lee's Summit, Independence, Blue Springs, Liberty, Overland Park, Olathe, Lenexa, Shawnee, and more. Not sure if you're in our area? Just call (816) 353-2160.

Question 11

Can you insulate existing walls without removing the drywall?

Accepted Answer

Often, yes. We use blown-in and injection methods to insulate existing wall cavities from small access points, avoiding a full drywall tear-out. Our evaluation determines whether your walls are good candidates.

Question 12

Will insulation really stop ice dams?

Accepted Answer

Proper attic insulation combined with air sealing and balanced ventilation is the most effective way to prevent ice dams. By keeping your roof deck cold and even, melting snow can't refreeze at the eaves — eliminating the leaks and water damage ice dams cause.
